Cary is a village located in Algonquin Township, McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,531 at the 2000 census. A 2003 special census put the village's population at 17,827.

Geography

Cary is located at (42.2129566, -88.2483260).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.3 square miles (14 km2), of which, 5.2 square miles (13 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (1.13%) is water. It is located on the Fox River.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 15,531 people, 4,962 households, and 4,108 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,956.3 people per square mile (1,142.2/km²). There were 5,037 housing units at an average density of 958.8 per square mile (370.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.53% White, 0.39% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.84% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races/ethnicities. Hispanic or Latino/Latina of any race were 5.43% of the population.

There were 4,962 households out of which 52.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.9% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% were non-families. 14.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.48.

In the village, the population was spread out with 34.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $76,801, and the median income for a family was $82,568. Males had a median income of $58,077 versus $32,851 for females. The per capita income for the village was $26,903. About 0.8% of families and 1.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.6% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.

Schools

There are four public elementary schools: Briargate, Maplewood, Three Oaks, and Deerpath (Grades K-5), although Maplewood School is now closed (1948–2010), one middle school: Prairie Hill (Grades 5-6) which is now closed, and one junior high school: Cary Junior High School (Grades 6-8), and high school, Cary-Grove High School, which shares its student body with Fox River Grove. There is also a catholic school named Saint Peter and Paul (k-8) The Trojans are the 2009, State of Illinois, Class 6A Football Champions and Class 4A Girls volleyball Champions, and they are also the 2010 state runners up in class 4A Girls volleyball. Some students in Cary also attend schools in the elementary school district of Crystal Lake (DST. 47) and Community Unit School District 300, a large district based out of Carpentersville. The high school districts are 155 and Community Unit School District 300.

Libraries

The majority of Cary residents belong to the Cary Area Public Library District,[3] while a smaller portion of the village falls within the boundaries of the Algonquin Area Public Library District.[4]

Founding

In 1841, William Dennison Cary purchased 82 acres (33 ha) for $1.25 an acre at the location of the current town and built a farm. In 1856, Cary included a train station for the Illinois & Wisconsin Railway. The site was approved and a post office was added with the designation "Cary Station." The community around Cary Station was incorporated in 1893 as Cary, Illinois.[5]

Cary in popular culture

The interior of the bed and breakfast room that Bill Murray's character stays in, in the 1993 film Groundhog Day, was built in a warehouse in Cary.[6]

Suzanne Evenson of Cary was featured on HGTV's show House Hunters International on December 8, 2010, showcasing her family's move from Cary to Dubai.[7]

A Senior prank Orchestrated by Maggie Mitchell and Chris Weidner (class of 2004) was recreated by MTV and filmed at the Mitchell household and Jaycee Pond. It was broadcast on MTV in 2008
